Donald Trump, at his first cabinet meeting, said he believed the US is negotiating “very successfully” with Russia and Ukraine.

The US president suggested that a ceasefire deal is close. “We’re going to make a deal with Russia and Ukraine to stop killing people,” he told reporters.

Asked if he is willing to make security guarantees as part of the deal, Trump replied:

I’m not going to make security guarantees beyond very much … We’re going to have Europe do that, because Europe is the next door neighbour.

He added that the US will be partnering with Ukraine “in terms of rare earth.” “We very much need rare earth, they have great rare earth,” Trump said.

Trump said it was “great deal for Ukraine too, because they get us over there, we are going to be working over there”.

Will the rare earth they send us be in a bucket? Like a paint bucket? Or even more rare like in a small envelope? Will it also be strange? Rare and strange? Or rare and weird? So many chooses!

The thing confusing me most is why Ukraine would trust any US’ “guarantee”, when they’ve been nothing but untrustworthy.

And people’s lives are not toys. I get the sentiment behind wanting less people to die. But Trump and Putin do think people’s lives are toys, so I can’t imagine the outcome of this being beneficial in any way to Ukraine.

Bro, this whole ordeal is a lesson in why not to trust the west.

Ukraine should’ve kept its nukes and mined the shit out of its border with Russia. Every single day of peace should’ve been spent preparing for war.

In hindsight, any retard who said “but preparations will be seen as aggression!” should be chastised for the damaging retards they are. Looks like when we listen to them, Ukraine still gets invaded!

the reason they gave up their nuclear weapons was that it was an expensive and cumbersome responsibility that they had no practical use for outside of dirty bombs and terrorist tactics, as they didnt have the means to launch the missiles.

an often forgotten bit of information too, is that during this time, the USA was NOT friendly with Ukraine, the US Government did not Trust Ukraine an inch, and was not going to tolerate them to have nuclear weapons.

in 1991 the world went from having like 7 Nuclear states, to 10 all in the blink of an eye. and the 7 who were there before, wanted the new crowd removed immediatley from the club

The world treated the Russian Federation as if it was the replacement for the USSR, and Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan were not going to be tolerated keeping these weapons, if they did, they would have been treated like North Korea or Iran.

          an expensive and cumbersome responsibility

Wait till they see how expensive and cumbersome fighting a war is…

What do you have to say about Ukrainians setting up defenses other than nukes?

As for NATO membership in particular, all NATO members need to accept new members…

But the EU has a similar clause to help with military invasions, so the US support isn’t strictly needed for security.

NATO will not see any new members again.

the Alliance is more or less defunct as there are trojan horses in it like Hungary, and America’s refusal to honor Article 5 is an open secret now.

Zelenskyy would probably get more support from his people if he told trump to get fucked than by being his dancing monkey. I know he’s desperately trying to do what’s best for Ukraine, but sucking up to that piece of shit isn’t it.

Oh how I wish this was true but a lot of Ukrainians are so weary they really just want the war to end and are frustrated with Zelensky. Believe me not everyone has the moral high ground or integrity, many, many just want him to make any kind of deal, no matter how big the insult and humiliation are.

(“Moral high ground” and “integrity” are very heavy words in this context. Right now, after just watching the argument, I am a bit speechless and can’t find better words. But please know that I do not want to refer to these people as having no integrity, morals, ideals, etc. They are desperate and have lost so much I can’t even put it in words.)

That’s a good point and thanks for the perspective. Of course I don’t know what it’s like for anyone in Ukraine at the moment, and I can understand the desperation. But trump is a thug, and a wannabe gangster. He will burn all of Ukraine if he thinks it will benefit him. His word is worthless, and so is any deal with the US. Every world leader knows that, it’s just so frustrating that none will stand up and say it, they just keep treating him like a legitimate president when he’s so clearly not.

I’m beginning to suspect that US society is so insane, that people go insane living there.
The stress from the constant lies and gaslighting, and the pressure of poor health and social services, the bigotry and discrimination, and a fundamentally flawed democracy. I seriously think these things combined make people crazy. There is no country I know of, that have such a degree of outright insane politicians.
Seems to me USA may be the worst society to live in now, among all developed countries.

Yes, exactly. Although you also must understand the US is the size of Europe and is about 3/4th it’s population. The differences between California, Florida and Texas are as wide as Germany, Greece and Poland (maybe not culturally but… Actually no, fuck it, yes even culturally lol).

The biggest problem is, on paper our federal government should be closer in power to your E.U. but in practice, 200 years have expanded feds and now we’re in a hostage situation. Imagine your own neighboring countries having 80% control over your country for 4-8 years every 4-8 years; it’s fucking awful. Oh, it’s Greece’s turn to run the economy? Fucking great.

It varies wildly depending on where you live. Remember that the US is a huge country.
