I know it’s a manually slewed scope, but I’m not trying to take crazy multi-hour exposures, I’m trying to show what people might expect to see IRL, and take promotional shots of people on the class. Then, I’ll probably look at making the radio telescope rig more seriously, hopefully before summer.

Thanks, that all makes sense! I noticed in hindsight that people were a little less jazzed about Trapezium than I was expecting. I mean, they appreciated it, but compared to my own initial reaction in seeing it (I had to go and tell someone right away), it was pretty muted. Sounds like I’ll have to do some homework.

Also, I should probably make clear that this is going to be a weekly recurring class that happens at different city parks. I’m trying to get people interested in actually doing amateur astronomy.
It doesn’t take too long to adjust unless somebody really headbutts the scope, which happens. Typically it’s just slewing targets back into frame because of the Earth’s rotation, which at 110x and a good RACI, is pretty easy. I think it takes maybe 15-20s every third guest to make sure they’ve got a good view (takes a bit longer sometimes if they’ve pushed the focuser in). I’m definitely thinking that a GOTO/PUSH TO modification kit might be in my future, but I’m trying not to spend more money at the moment.

The same way we build infrastructure to support population shifts between states or growth via birth rate. We have a market economy, and in a normally functioning market economy, the market will respond to changes in demand with new supply. Yes, we have issues with our housing supply, but that’s because we artificially restrict our housing supply via exclusionary zoning policies and NIMBYism, not because of immigrants. I’d love to have that conversation if you’re interested, and I have LOTS of media resources to share.

Just at the level of fuckin eyeballing it, the comparisons to how Hitler did it to how Musk did it are pretty damning.
I asked Germans on Lemmy if Musk would’ve gotten fined if he was anyone else and had done this at an event in Germany, the answer was a confident yes. I expect Germans know it when they see it, and know how not to fall foul of the law, so that’s another good test that says Musk knew what he was doing.
Last and most damning is when you consider the context of the man himself. Musk has been directly sponsoring and promoting not just right wing but reactionary parties like AfD, MAGA, and whatever Nigel Farage’s fucking circus is called for years. You can also see this in how Twitter’s content is managed. The dude has been putting in lots of very visible work boosting Nazi messaging and actual Nazi politicians/parties. Is it REALLY such a shock that he would, ahem, stop hiding his power level in such a public way after a win like the 2024 election? I don’t think so, and especially not if you accept that Musk believes there’s not going to be another meaningful election. I don’t think the other oligarchs think so either, that’s why they’ve been so quick to fall in line and pay their tribute.
