Summary
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia must withdraw to its pre-invasion positions from February 24, 2022.
In an interview with Newsmax, he hoped that Donald Trump, with European backing, could end the war and influence Putin.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine will not accept any negotiated settlement that excludes its involvement.
He also suggested that Trump needs a diplomatic success to differentiate his approach from Biden’s. However, there is no indication that Russia is willing to retreat.
For that to happen, Zelenskyy would have to step aside and allow elections which involve Eastern Ukraine. The whole reason there was a civil war was because Western Ukraine decided to initiate a coup to overthrow the government, a government which had gotten most of its votes from Ukrainians in the Eastern region.
It was only after 8 years of fighting that the Eastern side managed to convince Russia to join the fighting directly and allow Eastern Ukraine to become part of Russia.
If the western Ukrainians wanted Ukraine as it was, they would’ve had to have followed through on the negotiated solutions before now, or to have skipped the coup and civil war entirely and put forward a better candidate in the next election cycle.

Yeah, all of those “disgruntled citizens” starting a coup in eastern Ukraine with russian equipment were later confirmed to be Russian mercenaries.
In the end it all comes down to this: Russia will attack any country that was allied with them, but now wants to move away from that.
